With the reach of Walgreens’ over 8,000 U.S. stores and retail locations across worldwide, the companies stated that they will blend the power of Microsoft Azure, Artificial Intelligence platform and Microsoft’s Cloud, healthcare spending, and new retail solutions.

Both companies, speaking it a strategic partnership and disclosing no financial terms, said that they have made many years of research and development spend to develop healthcare solutions, improve health results and lower the cost of cure. The companies noted that as part of the partnership, Walgreens will roll out 12 pilots digital health concerns this year, which are intended to selling and marketing the selected healthcare related hardware and devices. Moreover, in a joint statement, both companies asserted that this grant will cover subject-matter experts, technology and tools, and they will also explore the potential to set up joint innovation centers in key marketplaces.

The move came after the last month CVS Health concluded its acquisition of Aetna, the nation’s third-largest health insurer and Amazon last year brought an online pharmacy. Retailers are seeking rapidly grow their healthcare businesses as a way to provide lower cost services and cares as U.S. consumers fight with mounting healthcare costs. Walgreens’ CEO said the collaboration with the digital expertise of Microsoft will aid the drugstore giants to meet healthcare consumers’ requirements. Additionally, the company said that it’ll work with Microsoft to engage the drugstores and clinics to the consumers, and enabling them to access digital services, such as virtual care.
