Google the search engine we rely on for a lot task we do in our day to day life is rolling out a new feature to get a list of health conditions that may have led to the symptom more accurately. It is been reported that almost 1% of all searches on Google are related to health conditions such as scratchy throat, headache, stomach pain, bleeding nose etc. But the result is not that consistent every time.
Internet is often the first source of diagnosis for people when they fall ill. “Anything Google does in this concerns will be big help for the patients”, said AteevMehrotra associate prof. at Harvard Medical School.
Veronica Pinchin, Product Manager said, “A team of Doctors from Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic reviewed the symptom information collected by Google by researching health conditions mentioned in web results and evaluated for related conditions”. Over time more features will be offered like availability in different language and coverage of more symptoms.
Although Google work with medical professionals, the results of the web search are not proposed medical advices. A study reported that one in every three search result get the correct diagnosis.
These fancy tools does look reliable but it is not every time and patients must be careful about the information they get from the web search. Patients must consult a Doctor as when compared to web searches they have a 80% to 90% accuracy rate.
