Konecranes, a Finnish company, headquartered in Hyvinkää, which specializes in the manufacturing and servicing of cranes and lifting equipment, in a recent press release on Thursday, Jan. 10th 2019, announced implementing Siemens’ digital innovation platform in a bid to accelerate speed-to-market of its products. The implementation will also help them connect both product and performance data together.
The company is leveraging Siemens’ MindSphere, an open cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) operating system, and the Teamcenter, the world’s most widely used product lifecycle management (PLM) software, in a bid to curb the number of physical prototypes, which in turn will increase product throughput and decrease product validation time. The company’s proof of value depicts the never seen IoT tweak to establish an effective framework that’s capable of connecting and synchronizing the virtual and physical worlds.
According to Juha Pankakoski, Executive VP, Technology at Konecranes, the current product design process is more inclined to an engineer’s development experience and generally shared assumptions than measured statistics from existing products. These shared assumptions often lead to something that is non-optimized and is heavily over-engineered. With an integrated digital twin platform, the company sees a major potential to accelerate the product development process, reducing prototypes, and increasing traceability, that eventually will improve quality and reduce product development cost.
