Samsung is not new to earbud market. One can find many workout friendly models in the market, but this one is different. Gear IconX is the new addition to Samsung’s portfolio. Even though many other companies like Earin, Bragi&Erato have introduced this kind of products. This is first one from Samsung without a wire to drape at the back of your neck. Samsung’s Gear IconX are self-contained earbuds, both can be popped in either ear and jammed out without any physical connection between them. These can be connected via Bluetooth and can be controlled using their touch sensitive surface. They can also be used without a phone and Bluetooth connection thanks to their 4GBinbuilt storage.
They come in a nice looking carry case to help you avoid losing them. This carry case also charges them with the inbuilt battery capable for 2 full charges after that the case can be recharged by plugging it directly into the wall socket. Samsung promised a battery life of 3.5 hours while played from 4 GB inbuilt storage and 1.5 hours while connected to Bluetooth. By far this is the biggest compromise Samsung made for the size of the earbuds.
The touch sensitive surface has similar operations like the button in the headphone chords these days. One, two & three taps on the surface will perform operations like play/pause, skip track ahead & skip track back respectively.
The so-called Ambient mode, when activated, lets you listen to the surrounding in clarity using the built-in microphones.“This mode is designed for riding & running around the city”, said Samsung. The Gear IconX has a heart rate monitor built into it which feed data to the S Health app and can also work on its own.
Priced at $199 these earbuds cost significantly less than its competitors and will be available in the third quarter this year.
